As the weather gets warmer, we can finally open up our windows and start airing out our home. The next step is usually to start cleaning out all the winter grime and dust. Here is a quick list of 9 spring cleaning tips to follow to get your spring cleaning routine rolling.

Dust:  start high and end low! This eliminates falling dust recontamination. Use a vacuum to get the ceiling corners, and a feather duster to get behind and under things you normally don’t move.

Using a damp cloth, wipe down your walls and ceilings. Use a swiffer mop ($9)- it will extend your reach. Don’t forget kitchen backsplashes! You might need a little elbow-grease there.

Wash the outside of your windows and window screens. Most windows these days swing open so that you can clean them. Use warm water and dishwasher liquid with a brush on the screens.

Wipe down your upholstered furniture and hard surfaces; use the vacuum crevice tool to clean out hard to reach places. Remove and wash window treatments.

Reseal grout throughout home: check where the walls meet the floor, countertop tiles, bathtub surrounds, etc. Apply grout sealer with a small foam brush. (If we installed your tile, you may not need to clean it! We use a grout that does not need to be sealed.

Polish metal finishes: window, door, and cabinet hardware are prime locations for metal – use liquid polishes unless heavily tarnished: then turn to paste.

Wax wood furniture: wash lightly with water and dishwashing liquid first, then apply paste wax with a cotton rag, then buff it out with a clean cloth when dry.

Rent a carpet cleaner, hire a professional, or take your carpets to be cleaned. Most bigger supermarkets and local Home Depots have a carpet cleaner rental station – check online for availability!

Clean the rest of the floors throughout the home, and wax or treat where appropriate (look up the material online and see what type of maintenance regimen is suggested). If you take care of your floors, they last.
