A Stunning Dover Home by Dane Austin Design & NEDC: Published in Boston Home Magazine
NEDC: Architects Who Build
This is a beautiful project in Dover, MA — the result of a collaboration between Dane Austin Design and New England Design & Construction.
Tucked deep within the woods, this early 1960s Cape has been beautifully transformed for 21st- century living. A complete renovation—inside and out—enhances both comfort and connection to nature, with reimagined spaces that embrace the home’s serene surroundings.
Expansive views of the pond invite glimpses of deer, foxes, and songbirds, while a cozy window seat outside the dining room-turned-library offers the perfect perch for birdwatching. Thoughtfully designed and meticulously updated, this home is poised to bring joy for generations to come.
From concept to completion, this collaboration showcases the power of visionary design, expert craftsmanship, and masterful storytelling through imagery.
The client raised her two children in this home over 20+ years, once she became an empty- nester, she decided to make it her own for the next 20 years to come.
Taking better advantage of the views of the pond and natural surroundings, focusing on her love of baking with an expanded kitchen (with two ovens in the kitchen island), reconfiguring the space with a more open floor plan and plenty of storage and display shelves to showcase the artifacts and art she picks up on her travels. She now has a completed space for entertaining and sharing time with her family and loved ones.
THE CHALLENGE:
How do we create a design which successfully opens the existing cramped cape home to natural light with an open plan while navigating stringent environmental restrictions which prevent expansion of the home’s footprint?
A concealed steel structural system replaced the dining room walls structurally and made the opening of the second floor over the living room possible.
By navigating structural, regulatory, and environmental challenges, the project demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform a traditional home into a contemporary, site-responsive living experience without compromising the integrity of the land or the character of the house.
This residence sits on a serene, wooded property with a reflective pond, but before renovation the home felt inward-facing and disconnected from the landscape that made the site special. The original Cape-style interior was compartmentalized, dark, and restrictive, limiting both family interaction and connection to the outdoors.
The goal of the renovation was to open the home, improve flow, and embrace the natural surroundings—while preserving the Cape’s traditional exterior and adhering to strict environmental constraints. The property’s wetlands limited any expansion of the footprint, and all interventions required careful water management and conservation review. The design and construction team needed to work within these environmental restrictions while still achieving a dramatic interior transformation.
To meet these challenges, the team reimagined the first floor as a sequence of connected spaces along the back of the home. Walls were removed, and the dining room gave up some of its footprint to expand the kitchen, creating a central gathering area that flows seamlessly into the living room and sunroom. By keeping the expansion entirely within the existing footprint, the renovation honored the site’s ecological restrictions while dramatically improving daily life.
The defining moment of the project is the vaulted living room. Within the existing Cape shell, the team reengineered the roof structure to introduce vertical volume, an overhead dormer, and a second-story balcony. Large windows now frame the pond and forest beyond, filling the space with natural light and forging a direct visual connection to the outdoors. A two-story fireplace finished in Venetian plaster anchors the room, and natural woods—maple, oak and walnut—run through the cabinetry, shelving, and floors, reinforcing the continuity between interior and landscape.
The result is a home that balances drama, elegance, and ecological responsibility. What was once a series of closed rooms is now a cohesive environment centered on openness, light, and connection to nature. By navigating structural, regulatory, and environmental challenges, the project demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform a traditional home into a contemporary, site-responsive living experience—without compromising the integrity of the land or the character of the house.
