There are things that you can start doing now to help you transition to the cold weather months before the first frost actually hits home. For most of us, we forget that these things need doing until after it’s gotten a little less than comfortable outside. This year, try getting a head start!

Here’s a list of quick checks that we think would be helpful to consider doing sooner rather than later:

  1. Check that heating vents are clear of obstructions, this promotes better air circulation and more efficient heat.
  2. Check out your curtains. During the summer months we want to maximize sunlight and breathability. Those filmy sheer drapery let a lot of sunlight and air in, however in the winter months that is not ideal. A heavier drape can actually help keep cold air out and warm air in, insulating you from drafts.
  3. Check for & fix drafts around the house. Incense can be a great way to identify where an air leak is. Caulking can plug up holes around window frames, with weathertripping around the moveable joints.
  4. Check your ducts: you can lose up to 60% of your heat through misalignments, gaps, or pinched ducts.
  5. Check your windows. Change out your summer screens for storm windows; if this isn’t possible, you can purchase plastic film to seal your windows and keep them insulated.
  6. Check the insulation in your attic: look for any black-stained areas because that will indicate a drafty area by the dust buildup.
  7. Check your thermostat. Program your thermostat to stay a couple of degrees cooler when you are not at home.
