Hill Craftsmen Builds Green

Y

ou’ve seen it on the news and you’ve read it in the papers, but how does “Green” apply to construction?

In construction, a green project would be any project which was designed and constructed with materials and techniques which enhance the health and general well-being of the occupants and surrounding community.  This type of building not only protects the environment, but also reduces energy costs.

We employed green building techniques on an addition constructed in Jamaica Plain. Some materials used were:

Green Materials

  • Recycled Cotton Insulation
  • Cork Flooring
  • FSC Lumber- Forest Stewardship Council- This group protects forests by managing sustainable wood.
  • Local cabinet manufacturer- Reduces pollution caused by overseas or cross- country shipment.

Energy Cost Reducing Materials

  • Energy Star Windows and Doors- reduces heating and air conditioning costs.
  • Large windows in south-facing side of house (allows sun to heat home)
  • Sun-blocking blinds (keeps air-conditioning costs down)

his project was completed ahead of schedule and on budget. The scope of work included building two floors onto the back of the house. On the bottom floor, the kitchen was extended and completely remodeled. The dining room was opened up and the adjacent sunroom was made into a library. The upstairs was extended to expand the bedroom and add a bathroom. For information on projects Hill Craftsmen has completed visit www.hillcraftsmen.com.
