What makes NEDC different?

I would say our process–and our people.

Joe Sousa joined the NEDC team in 2022 as a Project Manager–he has been a General Contractor in Central Massachusetts along with his brother since 2010. Joe has over 25 years of experience in residential and commercial construction, as well as strong experience in finish carpentry and custom mill work.

And while this is impressive–its his genuine level of care that sets him apart.

Clients who work with him simply fall in love with his level of professionalism and service.

These are the people who make up the team here at NEDC–and its invaluable.

This interview was done recently with Joe at a project he is overseeing in Jamaica Plain.

“My name is Joe Sousa. I’m a project manager at New England Design and Construction. I’ve been here for about 4 years now.

Before I came here, I was a General Contractor in the Central Mass area. I’d been a General Contractor for about 12 years working for myself. I did many projects ranging from half a million to a million dollars. I just found that it was a it was a tough grind, and I was at the point in my life where my children were young and I wanted to, you know, be able to enjoy some time with them. And that’s what led me here.

What I’ve learned here at NEDC is it’s even more so than Design and Build. We have an incredible sales staff that goes out and, you know, they’re looking for work. They’re meeting clients. They’re seeing if they’re a fit for us. From there they take it and they introduce it to our Design side which in a lot of other companies you don’t have that all in house. It it flows from Sales to Design to Budgeting to Construction and there’s so many different parts of that that you know can get convoluted when you have other people involved. That’s what makes NEDC so special is that you have the ability to work within each department closely and things don’t seem to slip. You know, pricing works out better. If there’s an issue with design, I’m on the phone and we we find a resolution right away.

The type of person that will thrive here at NEDC is somebody who’s got strong organizational skills. You have to be able to have a good plan. I think here at NEDC, they give you a lot of freedom. They allow you to develop your own plan. They allow you to your own timeline. And I think if you’re able to do that, set up your your day and your plan and your subcontractors, then everything runs smooth. And that’s the type of person that would thrive here.

I didn’t expect to have such a good relationship with all my clients that I’ve had here. In four years, I have been so fortunate to have an incredible group of clients. People that I’ve actually become friends with. I have clients that are sending me Christmas cards. I have clients that, you know, call me occasionally, see how I’m doing. Which is, you know, you don’t get that, you know, you don’t get that a lot. And I think part of that is we do such a good job in the sales department. You know, we really set ourselves up with clients to succeed. And I think we nurture them through the design process really well so that when it gets to us, they feel like they know us already. So it’s kind of easy from the construction side of it to be able to, you know, to just take that and run with it a little bit and make sure that we, you know, we can kind of hit a home run with it.

What I love about this this organization is the people. I truly truly love the people that work here. I I’ve got some people here that I’ve I call and talk to them on the phone more than I talk to my family. I really feel like I’ve become good friends with some of the people here. And I think that’s probably what I feel like I’ve gotten most out of NEDC is the relationships that I’ve built here. Absolutely.

If you’re scrolling and you’re looking at this job or you’re seeing this post, I was that person 3 and 1/2 years ago. I made the decision and honestly the only thing I’ve done wrong in this whole process was not making that decision years earlier.

My name is Joe Sousa. I’m a project manager here at NEDC.”
