Crafting History: Navigating Preservation Challenges

Given its designation as a historical site, NEDC collaborated closely with the Chestnut Hill Historic District Commission to navigate the intricacies of all exterior renovations. The meticulous process involved seamlessly integrating new exhaust venting, trim, siding, and lighting into the façade. The project also entailed replacing a decaying deck and railing, ensuring adherence to the original design for historical accuracy. Additionally, a supporting structure was erected to stabilize the deteriorating 100-plus-year-old stone wall along a section of the home’s foundation.

NEDC project architect Chris Adams reflects on the collaboration, noting, “We did have some back and forth regarding an appropriate door design.” He specifically mentions the installation of Marvin wood doors, replacing windows to establish direct access to the deck from the kitchen. Adams explains, “In the end, we created two pairs of doors with transoms that echo the style of the existing ballroom doors.” Despite the discussions, Adams believes that the commission appreciated the attention and restoration work directed toward the long-neglected and historic house. The project stands as a testament to the delicate balance between preservation and modernization in the realm of architectural history.
